Ten farmers, ten grieving families
The reported victims are: Sadanand Ramteke — Kotha, Yavatmal.,Sachin Ramteke — Talegaon, Amravati.,Jagjivan Dongre — Phulsawangi, Yavatmal.,Ajay Shende — Bhadumbri, Yavatmal.,Ashok Kharule — Shindola, Amravati.,Prashant Khamankar — Navegaon, Chandrapur.,Sandeep Gawhane — Nilat, Bhandara.,Anand Mali — Ural, Akola.,Manoj Todsam — Mahadoli, Yavatmal,.Pralhad Garule — Savargaon, Yavatmal.Five cases were reported from Yavatmal, two from Amravati and one each from Chandrapur, Bhandara and Akola.“These are not merely statistics. Behind every death stands a devastated family, children facing an uncertain future and a village struggling with grief. We must prevent the next tragedy rather than merely mourn the last,” Tiwari said.
Drought, debt and an unprecedented rural emergency
Maharashtra declared drought conditions in 305 of its 358 talukas in October 2026, affecting approximately 85% of the state's administrative subdivisions. A subsequent relief decision covered 304 talukas, with ₹7,500 crore approved for advance assistance of ₹5,000 each to approximately 15 million eligible farmers.Vidarbha alone accounts for 108 drought-affected talukas.Cotton, soybean and pigeon-pea cultivators face crop failures, repeated sowing expenses, mounting debts, uncertain insurance payments and inadequate market returns.Reported government data indicate more than 13,000 farmer suicides across Maharashtra between January 2022 and June 2026.“Five thousand rupees cannot rebuild a devastated agricultural economy. Relief must reach farmers before desperation destroys their families,” Tiwari warned.
He also urged protection for soybean growers against possible price pressures arising from agricultural imports under India-US trade arrangements.Government announcements, opposition politics and administrative delaysTiwari questioned whether government announcements were translating into timely assistance and criticised political parties for prioritising confrontation over practical relief.
“Governments announce packages, opposition leaders hold press conferences, and administrative files continue moving. But who visits a distressed farmer's home to ask whether the family has food, medicine or money for children's education?”He demanded transparent reporting of compensation payments, insurance settlements, loan restructuring and pending assistance.
A Ten-point humanitarian action programme
Tiwari appealed to industrialists, doctors, engineers, lawyers, traders, shopkeepers, teachers, employees, retired professionals and voluntary citizens to visit drought-affected villages and undertake direct assistance:Immediate financial assistance: Food, medicines, education, household necessities and agricultural inputs for farmers and labourers.Water conservation: Community-supported farm ponds, watershed development and water-harvesting projects.Soil restoration: Soil testing, erosion prevention and improvement of agricultural fertility.Cropping diversification: Locally suitable, water-efficient crops, intercropping and sustainable farming.Education, healthcare and counselling: Medical services, educational support and confidential professional mental-health assistance.Transparent relief delivery: Public accountability for government and NGO expenditure, preventing corruption and ensuring direct beneficiary support.Rural employment: Agro-processing, dairy, livestock, small enterprises, women's livelihoods and vocational training.Addiction treatment: Voluntary de-addiction services and family counselling.Community dialogue: Compassionate engagement with distressed families and accessible support networks.Action instead of committees: Use existing local institutions to deliver assistance immediately, without creating additional committees, organisations or ceremonial programmes.“Whether government agencies or NGOs, public resources must reach distressed families, not disappear into administrative expenditure or corruption,” he emphasised.
Thirty years of struggle — an extraordinary offer of cooperation
In a significant departure from political confrontation, Tiwari offered unconditional cooperation to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Maharashtra Government.“For thirty years, I have fought for farmers, agricultural justice, debt relief and tribal communities. I have disagreed with successive governments. But today, saving a farmer's life is more important than political differences, personal ego or ideological prejudice.”“I seek no office, committee membership, authority or political recognition. I am prepared to work with the government to prevent further suffering.”He called for adequate crop-loss compensation, meaningful debt relief, lawful recovery protection, pending insurance payments, affordable agricultural credit and fair crop prices.
Turning tragedy into collective responsibility
“Drought is not merely a shortage of rainfall. It is a crisis of livelihoods, dignity, social trust and human hope,” Tiwari said.“If villages survive, cities prosper. If agriculture survives, industry prospers. If farmers survive, Maharashtra has a future.”“This crisis is difficult, but not impossible to overcome. Let government, opposition, administration, industry and civil society work together. Let us transform this tragedy into an opportunity for rural reconstruction.”“Farmers do not need another speech. They need a reason to live, and the means to survive.”
