The crisis hit home at the highest administrative levels following the suicide of Bhikku Jadhav in Umri Kinhala village. Jadhav—a close relative (Jawai) of Yavatmal’s Guardian Minister, Sanjay Rathod—took his own life in his field following catastrophic losses due to consecutive re-sowing failures, surging input costs, and prolonged delays in government debt relief.
Systemic Collapse and Local Outrage
During a fact-finding visit to the bereaved family by prominent farm rights activist Kishor Tiwari, Tribal Leader Santosh Naitam, Ramesh Chavan, Prem Chavan, Moreshwar Vatile, and Manoj Gawande, the victim’s family brought the grim realities of Vidarbha’s rural economy to light:
Crippling Financial Costs: Seeds and fertilizer prices have skyrocketed (with seed bags rising to ₹2,200), while market prices for cotton, pulses, and wheat remain unviable. Farmers are selling produce at distress rates (e.g., wheat sold at ₹1,500/quintal versus market purchase rates of over ₹3,200–3,500/quintal).
Private Education & Healthcare Strain: Families are burdened by high costs for private education and healthcare. Jadhav’s grandson, currently pursuing an engineering degree, requires over ₹10,000 per month for fees, housing, and food—expenses impossible to sustain on failing farm incomes.
Delayed Debt Relief: Though Bhikku Jadhav’s name eventually appeared on the state’s loan waiver list, the clearance came after his death, highlighting fatal administrative red tape.
Bureaucratic Neglect: Local leaders expressed severe outrage over the complete absence of top district authorities—including the District Collector, Sub-Divisional Officer, and Tehsildar—alleging administrative indifference and widespread corruption.
Widespread Distresses Across the District
The crisis is not isolated. In nearby Bhadumri village (Kelapur Taluka), Rupesh Narsing Achelewar (35) also ended his life last week after failing to recover losses from double-sowing and being excluded from the debt waiver list. His family reported receiving zero aid or visits from local administration or elected officials.
Call for Prime Ministerial Intervention
Drawing parallels to the severe agricultural emergency of 2004, farm leader Kishor Tiwari urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally visit the distress-hit district of Yavatmal—echoing former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s historic visit—and immediately announce a comprehensive Special Relief Package for Vidarbha’s farming community.
"The government must urgently overhaul its agricultural policy—drastically reducing input costs, guaranteeing fair crop prices, and ensuring immediate credit flow—before the crisis deepens further," stated Tiwari.
