In the last 48 hours Vinod Dhore Res. Dhabhevirli District Bhandara, Bhojraj Raut Res. Chorti and Neelkanth Pradhan Res. Ranmochan, both from Chandrapur District, Bansi Pawar Res. Gandhinagar and Dadarao Bobde Res.Gaganmal from Yavatmal districts have committed suicide and till June this year in Vidarbha 694 farmers have committed suicide in West Vidarbha and 228 in East Vidarbha. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had repeatedly promised that crop loan waiver is in pipeline and due to the crop failure in Vidarbha, cotton and soybeans did not got proper MSP, drought was not declared, crop insurance was not paid and till June 30, crop loan distribution was only 45 percent resulting that farmers' suicides have reached a peak in Vidarbha,. Although Yavatmal district is known as the capital of cotton farmers suicides in the country, but in the last three years, Amravati district is becoming the new capital of farmer suicides according to the government statistics. Amravati district bordering Yavatmal also has a cotton and soybean belt under cultivation and some parts of the district grow the famous Nagpur orange. Till May this year, 143 farmers have committed suicide in Amravati. With 154 days in five months, practically a farmer committed suicide every day in Amravati district,as per the state government figures, while Yavatmal is second, but not far behind, with 132 suicides till May 2024 in government statistics. farm suicides Figures for June are yet to be compiled,Tiwari aaded. Amravati has overtaken Yavatmal in suicides since 2021, when 370 farmers committed suicide in 2012, followed by 349 in 2022 and 323 in 2023. According to government figures, 290, 291 and 302 farmers committed suicide in Yavatmal from 2021 to 2023 respectively.
Farmer activist Kishore Tiwari said the situation is particularly critical in Amravati. Farmers switched to soybeans, and production declined significantly. Last year the rates had also fallen to Rs 4000 per quintal. Lacking adequate banking credit, many depend on small finance companies or moneylenders and face harsh recovery and commit suicide Since 2001, the state government has been maintaining data on farmer suicides in six districts of West Vidarbha; Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Washim, Buldhana and Wardha. More than 22 thousand suicides have occurred in the district in two decades. Now Kishore Tiwari earnestly requested that all the political parties should find a solution on this serious issue
